Symptom

The device's Windows system does not start up properly and you may want to re-install the firmware snapshot.

Problem

If the devices local Setup can not be used and the device can not be contacted via IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) either, the firmware snapshot can not be installed in the usual way.

Solution

These are the instructions for IGEL Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WES7). For IGEL Windows 10 IoT, please refer to the How-To Updating the firmware without using IGEL Setup or UMS (W10).

The firmware update can also be carried out on the device's Linux console without IGEL setup application:

  1. Download the update file (.zip) for your device from the IGEL download server.
  2. Provide the unpacked update file (.snp) by HTTP, FTP or USB storage device (see below).
  3. Boot the device.
  4. Press [ESC] key during booting, the boot menu will open.
  5. Select Download Firmware Image from the boot menu.
  6. Navigate through the parameters using the arrow keys and confirm your selection using the OK or Cancel tab.

Carry out the update. The exact procedure varies according to the protocol which is to be used, that is, FILE, HTTP, or FTP; see the instructions below.

FILE

Prerequisite:

A snapshot file is available on a FAT32-formatted USB storage device in directory \igel\snapshots.

If the device is running IGEL Universal Desktop W7 version 3.12.100 or higher, the USB storage device can be NTFS-formatted. The snapshot file size is unlimited. The snapshot file can reside in any directory.

  1. Connect the USB storage device to the device.
  2. Delete all pre-configured values.
  3. Enter file in the protocol selection box.
  4. Enter the filename of the snapshot file (.snp).
  5. [optional] Enable (true) Reset Terminal Settings for resetting all configuration parameters to the factory default settings.
  6. Confirm the settings you have entered with OK.
Download and installation of the update will begin.

Do not interrupt the update process when it is under way as this could result in system inconsistencies. Do not remove the USB device until the update has finished.

Due to the limitations of the FAT32 file system the .snp file size must be less than 4 GiB (2³² = 4.294.967.296 Byte).

HTTP

Prerequisite:

A snapshot file is available on an HTTP server.

  1. Delete all pre-configured values.
  2. Enter http in the protocol selection box.
  3. Enter the server and port for HTTP (the standard UMS HTTP port is 9080).
  4. Enter the remote path to the snapshot.
  5. Enter the filename of the snapshot file (.snp).
  6. Enter the logon data for the server.
  7. [optional] Enter the proxy which is to be used.
  8. [optional] Enable (true) Reset Terminal Settings for resetting all configuration parameters to the factory default settings.
  9. Confirm the settings you have entered with OK.
Download and installation of the update will begin.

Do not interrupt the update process when it is under way as this could result in system inconsistencies.

FTP

Prerequisite:

A snapshot file is available on an FTP server.

  1. Delete all pre-configured values.
  2. Enter ftp in the protocol selection box.
  3. Enter the server and port for FTP (the standard FTP port is 21).
