Getting Started with IGEL Subscriptions and Licenses
The IGEL software licenses are purchased through subscriptions called IGEL OS Editions. All IGEL OS Editions include licenses for the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) and licenses for the IGEL OS devices. Subscriptions give you the right to use the software and licenses make that right active on devices and in UMS. In this article, you can find the basics on IGEL licensing.
From Subscription to Licensed Software
Purchased subscriptions need to get translated to licenses using the IGEL License Portal (ILP). You can find an overview below on how it is done step-by-step:
Finding the right IGEL OS Edition and add-ons.
You find the IGEL OS Edition that fits your business needs. These editions are tailored bundles of software, services, support, and licenses to fit different business needs (like Essential, Standard, Enterprise, Healthcare, Government). For details, see IGEL OS Editions.Purchasing an IGEL OS Edition.
The IGEL OS Edition is the subscription for a given term that gives you the right to use IGEL products and features.Getting a Subscription Key and registering to the ILP.
The Subscription Key is a permanent ID that is used to decouple the actual order from the management of the licenses included in the subscription.
Your Subscription Key appears in the ILP with the Product Packs belonging to that Subscription Key. A Product Pack is a term used in the ILP to refer to a set of licenses. A Product Pack ID is assigned to a permanent Subscription Key.Managing Licenses in ILP.
The administrator works with the Product Packs in the ILP to roll out licenses via the UMS to IGEL OS endpoint devices.
For a detailed guide on license administration, see IGEL License Portal (ILP) Guide for Administrators.Deploying the licenses.
The licenses assigned to the IGEL OS devices or UMS servers enable software features. Licenses are the technical solution that IGEL software checks for valid entitlement before it runs or allows features.
More on IGEL Licenses
IGEL license types:
IGEL OS device licenses: These are called Workspace Edition (WE) Licenses or, starting from January 1 2026, IGEL Subscription License (ISL). They enable physical or virtual endpoints to run IGEL OS 11 or IGEL OS 12.
UMS Licenses: These enable features in the Universal Management Suite (UMS).
Add-on Licenses: These enable extra features or applications.
For details, see IGEL License Types.
Subscription and License Expiration
When your subscription expires, the licenses belonging to that subscription also expire. When the license for the IGEL OS device or the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) expires, functions get limited or deactivated. For details on the effects of expiration, see IGEL Subscription - Entitlements and Effects of Expiration.
License Renewal
You can renew subscriptions/licenses via the ILP to regain access. For details, see Renewing a Maintenance / Subscription in the IGEL License Portal (ILP).
