The exact meaning:

Major Version 

...means a generally and publicly available version of the Software.

  1. It includes functional enhancements and improvements.
  2. It fixes for bugs and defects.
  3. It is characterized by a change in the number to the left of the first decimal point. 

Minor Version

...indicates scheduled stable releases within one major version. A minor release exists always in connection with a stable release.  

Stable Release 

...means a generally and publicly available version of the Software. It is characterized by the last digit with two zeros at the end.

  1. It includes a limited number of new functionality.
  2. It fixes for errors and defects.
  3. It is characterized by a change in the number to the right of the first decimal point.

Private Build 

...means a version with limited availability unless it includes a fix for common and widespread problems. 

  1. It contains very little or no new functionality.
  2. It fixes for bugs and defects. It is characterized by a change in the last two numbers to the right of the last decimal point. 

Dead End Release

...means that the version is not publicly available and no subsequent versions based on it will be available.

  1. It contains only new functionality.
  2. It fixes for bugs and defects explicitly required by a customer. It is indicated by the addition "DER" to the right of the last decimal point.

Release Candidate

...means a not publicly available version, which is still under development. It is identified by the addition "RC(0-n)" to the right of the last decimal point.
